H2OToronto serves as an opportunity to educate and inspire our local community to impact the ongoing water crisis in Africa, and around the world.
In Amberomena, Madagascar, it takes a village to fulfil the duties necessary to survive. Traditionally, men will earn the family’s income through agricultural or manual work; women will collect water, cook and look after children. Those living in hard-to-reach areas can be forgotten entirely, making their open sources of water rarely safe. When open to nature, water sources can be contaminated with industrial waste, animal faces, parasites, and waterborne diseases like cholera. They are also unreliable, drying up or running out. This means needing to find a new source, which in most cases would be miles away.
Our mission is to provide a water facility that is local to the deserving village of Amberomena, using untapped natural resource, and that is owned collectively by a community.

Providing a local source of clean water can drastically reduce the amount of time women and children need to spend collecting water, and vastly improves their health. It also opens up opportunities for women to earn an income themselves and for children to attend school.

YOUR DONATION WILL PROVIDE TRAINING TO COMMUNAL WATER AND SANITATION COMMITTEES, SANITATION EDUCATION FOR LOCAL VOLUNTEERS, THE TRAINING OF LATRINE MASONS, AND SUPPLIES TO ENSURE UPKEEP OF A NEW COMMUNITY TAP.
It takes a village to build and maintain a safe water source in a community. Each community that WaterAid Canada + H2OCanada supports actively involves the community in the planning, implementation and sustainability of the project. Community members help build the taps that provide for their families and local leaders are trained and empowered to maintain and sustain each facility for the future.
